OpenAI and Thailand’s MHESI launch accelerator for healthcare and education AI startups

OpenAI and Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation launched an eight-week accelerator for ten Thai startups working in healthcare, wellness and education.

OpenAI and Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation have launched an eight-week accelerator for Thai AI startups, signaling how frontier AI companies are moving from generic developer access toward country-specific product ecosystems. The program was announced in Bangkok on August 28, 2026, and is being delivered with partners including the National Innovation Agency, Mahidol University and Techsauce.

The OpenAI x MHESI AI Accelerator brings together ten startups working across health, wellness and education. OpenAI described it as its first public-private partnership with the Thai government focused on supporting local startups. The goal is not simply to show that a prototype can call a powerful model. The program is meant to help companies turn early ideas into products that can be evaluated, deployed, trusted and eventually scaled.

Thailand is a meaningful test market for this kind of program. OpenAI said internal data places Thailand among the top 20 countries globally for weekly ChatGPT active users. It also said weekly active usage of Codex in Thailand has grown more than 350-fold since the start of 2026, also putting the country among the top 20 globally for Codex usage. That momentum gives OpenAI a base of builders and users, while Thailand’s healthcare and education needs give the accelerator concrete local problems to address.

The first cohort is split evenly between medical or wellness AI and education. OpenAI listed CARIVA, Wello Food, Dietz, Precisionize, FitSloth, Curico, insKru, Floaino, EasyKids Robotics and Globish as participating startups. The company said the teams were selected with NIA, the Ministry of Education and the MHESI innovation network, and some had participated in the AIAT x OpenAI Codex Hackathon Bangkok earlier in the year.

The program structure is practical. OpenAI said each startup will receive 2,000 dollars in API credits, one-on-one technical guidance, access to its latest frontier models and a dedicated mentor. Weekly sessions will cover product design, engineering, automated testing, evaluation, responsible AI, privacy and security, cost management, growth and fundraising. MHESI will connect teams with research and talent networks, NIA with funding and growth channels, and Mahidol University with academic expertise.

The use cases show why reliability matters more than demo quality. CARIVA is developing a multilingual voice agent for hospital phone lines that can handle routine requests such as appointment scheduling and recognize when a caller may be describing a medical emergency. Curico is building AI-powered learning tools for children, families and educators, with plans for pilots in Bangkok childcare centers and teacher training through an AI storybook workshop. These are not low-risk novelty apps. They require evaluation, safeguards and real user feedback before broad deployment.

OpenAI said the accelerator will conclude with a Demo Day in Bangkok in November, where startups will show working products or substantial upgrades, evidence from representative users, initial evaluation findings and a path to implementation. The program reflects a broader direction in AI deployment: national ecosystems want local builders to turn global models into trusted services. If the accelerator succeeds, its importance will not be measured only by startup funding, but by whether Thai teams can create durable AI products grounded in local language, institutions and public needs.
